Ancient temples and French colonial buildings are nice but after all the strolling through busy streets, waking up with the sunrise and spending hours in transport, we needed a rest. So we went to Sihanoukvile, Lonely Planet promised us white beaches and crystal blue water, and it was exactly that.
We wanted to go to some of the famous islands but with the price to get there and the time we had it just wasn’t worth it, so we decided to just stay on the beaches.
But we were lucky. The first morning after our arrival, after we spent 16 hours in the bus from Battambang, we went to the beach for breakfast. That day was horribly warm and we didn’t have any big plans so we just sat in the shadow of the beach bar, drank fruit shakes, read and relaxed. Out of the blue we had company, one of those tourist haunters for boat trips who sat down with us and started to try to sell us the most expensive tours. We told him that we didn’t have money or interest for stuff like that so he came out with an offer for a one day trip visiting three islands, snorkeling, breakfast and lunch. We really liked this offer but we wanted to stay on one of the islands for a night. He didn’t have any problem with that, we could just come back with the tour of the next day. We even pushed the price down a bit and all of a sudden we had a great plan for the next two days, for only 14 usd p.p.

The next day a tuk–tuk (which was part of the deal) picked us up at 8:00 in our guest house and drove us to the peer where we had a nice breakfast in one of the bars on the beach.

good morning nobody here
On the boat were eight other people, everybody had a seat and could have as much water as they wanted and one coke, what else could we wish for. At first we went to snorkel by one of the islands, it wasn’t anything special but we still had fun. After one hour of chasing fish and breathing through a tube we set land on the other island, where we met people from other tours. There we found a nice bamboo hut (like in the movies) for just 10 USD, and had the lunch: fish and chicken from the BBQ, salad and fresh fruit. Awesome day and the best thing was still ahead, because after two hours on this island all the boats left and we were basically alone. Good good indeed! We walked on the beach, had a beer while watching the sun set, had dinner by candle-light in a tiny restaurant that opened just for us and went to bed.

The following morning we explored more of the island and around 1 pm were supposed to be picked with the boat. Oops, it was already 2 pm and our boat was nowhere to be found so we went to ask another tour for some information. Apparently our company didn’t set out today but we could go back with them for 5 USD p.p. and get our money back at the harbour. So we quickly packed our stuff and went with them. On the way back we snorkeled a bit more, and when we were back on shore went to the information center, called our agent and got the money back.
