It would be weird to start writing this first post about gardening. So for this and many other reasons I will postpone that for later and will rather tell you what travelling means to me.

Travelling is visiting new places, getting to know their history and respecting the people with their culture and habits,

Laos is the most bombed country on the earth

travelling is trying to speak foreign languages, saying bonjour, como estas or oregato. Learning to say the two most important and magical words: hello and thank you, in every language,

communicating with people, talking with the locals and meeting other travelers, listening to their stories, sharing a table with them while drinking a beer and exchanging travel experiences, discussing politics or just playing cards,

trying all the different types of food, eating where the locals eat, going out, getting lost in food markets, eating in fancy restaurants or having an awesome barbecued fish from a street stall

Traveling is sleeping in strange places, dodgy guesthouses, five star hotels, friendly homestays, wet tents, hard park benches or white sandy beaches under millions of stars,

using all types of transport like hot air balloons, horses, busses, trains, rickshaws, planes, RVs, bicycles, subways, sky trains, tuk tuks, boats or just hitch hiking.

Traveling is being patient and flexible because you never know what is going to happen. If you will catch the train on time or did the tuk-tuk driver understand where you want to go. Is the bus even coming today? Or how much will the taxi driver charge for the ride.

Even if you miss that train, the tuk-tuk driver drops you off on the wrong place, the bus comes the next day or the taxi driver rips you off, you will always remember that. Eventually, once you are at home telling your stories to your friends and family, you will laugh at it all, because travelling is bringing home something that you couldn’t find there.

Travelling is getting to know all the corners of the world and appreciating home
